Contract Awarded for Implementation of Water Infrastructure Projects in Tanzania

Recently, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Construction, an Indian multinational that specializes in the treatment of water and wastewater signed an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) deal with authorities, to carry out new water infrastructure projects in Tanzania.
According to the agreement, the Indian multinational will develop raw water intake and water treatment facilities with a total capacity of 71,000 m3 per day, and construct six reservoirs, one for raw water storage and five for drinking water in numerous Tanzanian cities. The company will also install a total of 263 kilometres of pipes and carry out electromechanical works in the different facilities.
Exim Bank of India will fund the implementation of the entire project through a loan worth between 1,000 and 2,500 million rupees ($13 million to $33 million).
Expectations for the water infrastructure projects in Tanzania
The realization of the water infrastructure projects in Tanzania will move the east African country closer to the government’s goal to attain 93% access to clean drinking water for its citizens, 4 million of which according to the worldwide group Water.org do not have access to a safe drinking water source, by 2025.
The project complements a number of other programs, including the Dodoma Resilient and Sustainable Water Development and Sanitation Program and the Tanga region of north-eastern Tanzania’s 235 water point building project. The future facilities will be completed in June 2022 and will help 95,043 people in the Pangani, Korogwe, Lushoto, Kilindi, Mkinga, Muheza, and Handeni areas.
